In this week's Alabama Champion, the Arley Women's Club goes into action to help young readers.
Every month, 30 women go into the Meek Elementary School to help read one on one and also act out a book while in the classroom, which usually ends in laughter and a deeper love for reading among the children The women went into action when they heard the statistics that one in four children in Alabama do not read at grade level.
The children seem to love having the women come in and read. The Arley Women's group hopes to enrich the lives of the children and hope this help turns into successful futures for the children whose lives they touch.
Brenda Ladun, from abc 33/40 news, came to Meek Elementary School on January 11 to film the K.1.2.3. Let's Read, Indeed! storytelling session. Member and children’s author, Dorenda Doyle, performed the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.
