RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • Held the 49th Arley Day Festival at Hamner Park in May 2022.  Our gift to the community, the Arley Day Festival includes free rides and food for the kids, live music, games, horseback rides, and parade.  This year a variety of over 75 vendors of arts, crafts, food and services participated.  The annual car show and pancake breakfasts were also a big hit.  A 5K run/walk got the day started off on the right foot.
  • Held a variety of fun events at Pine Place Assisted Living in Arley including bingo, a Mexican fiesta, and craft days.  Members built a large outside deck for the residents to enjoy.
  • Supported the purchase of a building to house the Arley Senior Outreach Center.
  • Trunk or Treat and Movie Night in the Park was a big hit with the kids again this year, featuring members dressed in costume, their inviting and some spooky trunks, lots of candy, and free popcorn for the movie.
  • Hosted Arley's  annual Christmas Parade in December included Santa Claus and delicious soups
  • Charitable giving to the volunteer  fire departments of Arley and Helicon.
  • An annual sponsor for the Capstone Backpack Giveaway in Winston County, we helped provide school supplies for area children.
  • In 2016, AWC and the Town of Arley implemented the military banner program in Arley, the first of its kind in the state.  The banners proudly display veterans past and present from area families dating back to the civil war.  Banners and the American Flag proudly line the streets for the month leading up to the 4th of July and Veterans' Day each year.

EDUCATION

  • AWC was able to award close to $20,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors of Meek High School in 2022 to pursue their future careers. Whether it is to support learning a trade at a local community college or pursuing a 4 year degree, we are delighted to continue this annual tradition.
  • AWC set up an endowed scholarship with Wallace State and a matching grant to perpetuate our scholarship program for years to come.
  • Partnered with Meek High School to establish a FIRST robotics program for hands-on STEM learning.  Students participated in the Huntsville southern regional competition for the first time in 2022.
  • Earth Day is an annual opportunity for AWC to host an outdoor classroom at Hamner Park for 3rd and 4th graders of Meek Elementary.
  • Supported our local Arley Public Library with funds for the popular  summer reading program for kids and evening programs for all ages.
  • Charitable giving to the Meek Schools for educational materials, smart boards, ipads and various other tools have been an important part of our impact on the community.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Most recently, a new swing set with handicap- accessible swing at Hamner Park was installed.  Our playground now has a full compliment of activities to challenge kids of all ages.  This has been made possible in large part by a grant from the Walker Area Community Foundation.
  • The AWC recycling program in Arley has recycled over 20,000 tons of plastics, cardboard, and aluminum since its inception in 2018.  We continue to collect recyclables every 2 weeks and educate our members on the value of recycling and the impact it can have on our community.
  • AWC has adopted 2 miles of roadside in the Arley area through the Alabama PALS program for trash clean up.   Over 10 miles every month are tackled by our volunteer members.  In addition, the Smith Lake Rotary Club has joined us in our fight to keep our roads and park clean.
  • Tennis and pickleball courts have been installed at Hamner Park in conjunction with the Town of Arley for all to enjoy.  Clinics will be provided by an AWC member's husband for pickleball.

WAYS AND MEANS

  • We were able to raise over $100,000 through our various fundraisers over the past 3 years.  Our volunteer members work hard to make our fundraisers a success.  Christmas Auction, spring and fall yard sales, spring fern sale, Dog Daze, smith lake merchandise, and our ever popular bake sales to name a few.  We know how to raise money for the community!
  • We are so thankful for our generous Supporters and Donors who make this all possible.  You may see a list of our Supporters on our Supporter page.  We appreciate you considering giving them your patronage.
